KOTA MARUDU: Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal was criticised today for claiming to care for the people only after he had left the Barisan Nasional.

Barisan Nasional chairman Musa Aman said Shafie had failed to frequent his home state while he was a federal minister.

“He had millions of funds as a federal minister previously, but he never visited Kudat and only once came to Kota Marudu,” Musa said to over 1,000 people present at a government function today in this northern Sabah district.

“Only now, without a post, he is going into the kampungs (villages). How can you trust that kind of a leader?,” said Musa, who is Sabah chief minister.

Musa questioned the sincerity of opposition politicians, pointing out large numbers of members from various parties were leaving on a daily basis to join the ruling coalition.

“Why is this? It is because they realise only the BN can help the rakyat (people),” he said.

He said BN leaders had always remained close to the people before, during and after election periods. “We are not seasonal leaders.”

Musa praised Parti Bersatu Sabah president Joseph Pairin Kitingan and his deputy Maximus Ongkili for constantly putting the people’s welfare as a priority.

“Fighters in PBS like Tan Sri Pairin and Datuk Seri Maximus always think what’s important for the people,” he said.

Ongkili is seeking his sixth term as Kota Marudu MP. The BN is fielding Anita Baranting and Julita Majungki for the Tandek and Matunggong state seats respectively.

At today’s event, Musa, who is chief minister, presented native communal titles to recipients from five villages in Kota Marudu, covering some 6,739 acres.

In total, seven villages in the district, about 120km from the state capital, have benefited from the scheme.

Musa also presented 407 individual native titles to recipients from three villages under the Sabah Native Land Services (Pantas) programme totalling some 1,076 acres.
